Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative believes it is crucial to interact with today’s youth as a means of introducing them to the Cooperative way of doing business.   That is why our tagline, Our Energy Working For You goes beyond the wires to a variety of educational opportunities for youth and adults alike.   From safety presentations at area schools, to the Get Charged curriculum and the National Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. for high school students, you will find us active in your community.

Safety Presentations
Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative offers free safety education presentations for children through the use of Hazard Hamlet, Louie the Lightning Bug, videos and other resources.  It is our belief that electrical injuries can be avoided if children are taught safe practices at a young age.  If you would like us to visit your classroom or club meeting with our safety presentation, please contact the Member Support Department.

www.SafeElectricity.org
Safe Electricity is a multi-media public awareness program designed to compliment the existing safety-education activities of MVEC. Safe Electricity provides life-saving information through many venues, including radio and television public services announcements, news releases and articles and its comprehensive web site. Safe Electricity has received national recognition for the quality and scope it its programs and services.

"Get Charged"
In 2003, your Cooperative provided a free "Get Charged" energy curriculum to area middle schools.  Developed by The Discovery Channel and Touchstone Energy, the "Get Charged" program teaches youth in grades 5 through 8 the science of electricity. One "Get Charged" kit is available for check-out for students who are home-schooled.  Contact the Cooperative to reserve the kit.
Web Site Resource
A new website, www.UseElectricwisely.com, promotes the efficiency and benefits of electric power, products and technology. On this site, you can find a variety of consumer-related resources, including:

  • Updates about energy efficiency techniques, tools and tips
  • Current product information about electric technologies for the home
  • Online energy calculator showing how electric heating and cooling options can save costs for the homeowner
  • Lists of all member-owned electric cooperatives serving in Iowa, their websites and news pages
  • Contractor locator to help members find capable professionals to serve their energy-related needs
  • "Virtual Home" showing where electricity can provide savings and comfort throughout the house
  • Information about electrical safety
  • Facts and myths about electricity

The Iowa Marketing Group, which includes Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative's power supplier, Central Iowa Power Cooperative, developed the project.  All cooperatives in Iowa participate in the Website either individually or through their generation and transmission cooperative.
